Google Stored G Suite Passwords in Plain-Text

Google has inadvertently placed passwords of its customers on servers in plaintext after Facebook and Twitter, so any Google worker with access to servers could have read them. They are now being used to create the recent technology by Google.

Google found, in a blog posting on Tuesday, that its G Suite platform erroneously has stored unprecedented passwords on inner servers for 14 years due to the fact of a bug in the Google Apps password retrieval feature. a collection of cloud computer, productivity and collaboration tools for company customers G Suite, formerly known as the Google Apps platform

The error, which is now patched, lies in the G Suite customer’s Password Recovery Mechanism that enables business administrators to upload or manually set passwords for any user of their domain without understanding their prior passwords for on-board staff and for account recovery.

If admins were to reset, instead of encrypting those passwords, the admin console would store a copy in plain text, Google disclosed.

“We made an error when implementing this functionality back in 2005: The admin console stored a copy of the unhashed password,” Google says.

However, Google also states that passwords for simple text have not been stored in the Internet but on their own safe encrypted servers and that the firm did not find proof of improper access to anybody’s password.

“This practice did not live up to our standards. To be clear, these passwords remained in our secure encrypted infrastructure,” Google says. “This issue has been fixed, and we have seen no evidence of improper access to or misuse of the affected passwords.”

Google also clarifies that the bug was limited to business customers of its G Suite applications and that it did not affect a free version of Google accounts such as Gmail.

Although the firm did not reveal how many users might have been impacted by this bug beyond simply stating that the problem influenced “a subgroup of our G Suite business clients,” with more than 5 million G Suite business clients, the bug could impact a big amount of users— probably any user who used G Suite over the past 14 years.

Google has since removed the capacity from G Suite administrators to tackle the problem and emailed them with a list of customers affected, asking them to guarantee that those users reset their passwords.

Google claims the firm will automatically reset passwords for those customers who do not alter their passwords.

“Out of an abundance of caution, we’ll reset accounts that have not done so themselves,” the tech giant says.

Google is the recent technology firm to accidentally store unscathed passwords on its inner servers. Facebook has recently been in the news to store plaintext passwords on its inner servers for hundreds of millions of its customers, both Instagram and Facebook.

Twitter also revealed a comparable security bug nearly a year earlier, which unintentionally exposed passwords on its inner computer system for its 330 million users in readable text.
