Over the past few weeks, there has been an continuing buzz around Huawei. As you may have heard, many businesses have had to cancel their company partnerships with Huawei because the U.S. added Huawei to their Entity List.

This led in Google removing the Android license from Huawei, suspending assistance from ARM, and other partners pulling out of the business deals. In reaction, Huawei has accelerated the growth of its mobile operating

system in-house and is also pursuing other alternatives if a deal is not reached between the U.S. and China.

Huawei may be looking at whether they can operate with an current mobile OS rather than developing their own operating system from scratch. There aren’t so many choices out there, of course, but the Russian newspaper The Bell reports that Huawei is exploring Aurora OS as an option to Android.

The paper mentions two sources reporting that with Konstantin Noskov, the Russian Federation’s Minister of Digital Development, Communications, and Mass Media, Huawei ceo Guo Ping discussed using Aurora OS. Both the state-run digital service provider Huawei and Rostelecom declined to comment on The Bell.

The Bell is a relatively fresh Russian journal, but the renowned Russian journalist Yelizaveta Osetinskaya established and operated it, giving this report some legitimacy.

What is Sailfish OS and what does it mean for Huawei?

Sailfish OS

Registering as a blip in front of Android and iOS, Sailfish OS is a Linux distribution created by people behind Nokia’s doomed MeeGo OS. Sailfish OS is pre-installed on four systems, but can be installed on Sony Xperia X, XA2, XA2 Plus, and XA2 Ultra.

What makes Sailfish OS attractive to consumers is the nature of its open source. Anyone can obtain the source code and play as they see fit with the software. That somewhat runs counter to Android, which is also open-source but that does not have software operating on top of it.

Other drawings include compatibility with the Android app, a gesture-based navigation system, shortcuts to show some UI aspects, and multi-task reminiscent of what you’ll see on Android and iOS today.

The primary attraction, however, is the focus of Sailfish OS on privacy. Jolla gathers only the information necessary to operate its facilities and without your permission does not sell your data to third parties Also, without your

permission, Jolla does not retrieve information. If it went with Sailfish OS, this would be a smart move on the part of Huawei. The company wouldn’t have to put nearly as many resources into creating and promoting a fresh

portable OS, a Herculean task by any stretch of imagination. There is still a issue with sideloading Android apps, but Huawei might be able to build an app store that is compatible with Sailfish OS.
